Where are you all coming from?

People ask me where I’m from. I’m from the UK. I grew up in the South East of England, on Canvey Island in the Thames Estuary. Around age 20 I moved to the Lake District, and settled for a while near Lancaster. I have very fond memories of Lancaster and the surrounding areas. Of all the places I’ve been in the UK, Lancaster is the place I think of as ‘home’. I no longer have a house there, but this is what my home looked like when I lived there.

9 Moorside Road

The house was about 200 years old, and is part of an extension on a house built in 1770. The original house was divided into 3 separate dwellings long ago. There are 2 small rooms upstairs, and the area downstairs is just under 6m x 4m. I miss my Renault Clio. I’ve been driving a Proton Wira in Malaysia for the last 2 years. It’s a pity Malaysia wasn’t a French colony. The cakes here could be better too.

A pity Malaysia wasn’t a French colony? Well, I beg to differ. Malaysia is lucky to be under British rule. I have been to Indonesia and saw what it is like after years of Dutch rule. I also saw what the Philippines is like after many years of Spanish rule. Can’t imagine what Philippines would be like if USA had never been there. And I have been to Thailand where they have never been colonized.

At the very least, the British left behind an efficient administration system, an English education system such that the older generation like me can understand the internet, and an efficient transportation system. They also leave behind the Internal Security Act which the government has put to good use to keep the Opposition “in line”. Ask the government any time, would they trade in ISA for french cakes? LOL.

But did you go to Cambodia? Ex-French colony – the cakes were fantastic last time I was in Siem Reap. I do strongly associate the French with good cakes! That’s all I’m saying…
