The RJ45 socket is the plastic push-in plug on the end of Cat 5 cables. It looks a bit like a telephone plug, only slightly larger. BNC is like the connector on the end of a TV aerial cable. The Old PC in the article is about 12 years old. Around that time, Cat 5 'twisted pair' cabling was taking over from the coaxial cabling that most networks were made with. It was quite usual to find network cards with both connectors on, like in this PC.
