I'm 98% convinced you haven't copy-and-pasted the code correctly from Google AdSense. Check, check and check again. Look for missing or new spaces, missing or new newlines. Sometimes it's possible for a stray carriage return to get into the HTML, and WordPress just takes it all away instead of sending it to a browser.
